Install Google Analytics on the WordPress Dashboard
In my last article titled, “Google FeedBurner in WordPress Made Easy,” we set up a RSS (Really
Simple Syndication) feed on the website using Google FeedBurner. In this
article we will install Google Analytics on the WordPress Dashboard using a
plugin called ExactMetrics (formerly Google Analytics - GADWP).
Google Analytics is a free website monitoring service that
enables monitoring website traffic. This monitoring service enables tracking
website visitors; monitoring the traffic of individual pages; seeing what
devices visitor use to visit the website; and so much more.
A Google Analytics account must be created in order to use
the plugin. However, after setting up the account in Google Analytics, it is
suggested that newcomers to monitoring websites first become familiar with
monitoring the website using the ExactMetrics (formerly Google Analytics -
GADWP) plugin. The plugin allows for monitoring the website traffic directly
from the WordPress Dashboard without having to switch to the Google Analytics
website.
Installing
The ExactMetrics Plugin
As mentioned above, a Google Analytics account is needed
to use the ExactMetrics plugin. Follow the instructions below to set up a
Google Analytics account and install the ExactMetrics plugin.
1.Type “google analytics” into your browser’s search
field. In the results, click the link for “Google Analytics Solutions –
Marketing Analytics and Measurement.” This will take you to the Google Analytics
homepage.
2.If you already have a Google Analytics account you will
sign in. If not, you will need to create a Google Analytics account.
3.You will click on the “Admin” tab at the top of the
page.
4.Next, click on the “Account” column, and scroll to the
bottom of the page to create an account.
5.Make sure that “Website” is selected and complete the
form. Then click “Get Tracking ID.”
6.Next you will be asked to “Accept Service Agreement.”
Click “I Agree” to proceed.
7.Copy the Tracking ID code.
- The Tracking ID
looks like this: UA-000000000-1
8.Next, go to your WordPress Dashboard.
9.From your WordPress Dashboard menu, select “Plugins,”
then “Add New.”
10.In the search bar on the upper right side of the
plugins page, type “ExactMetrics,” then select the ExactMetrics plugin.
· Make sure that the plugin description states: “Compatible with your version of WordPress.”
11.Next, click the “Install” button. After the plugin is
installed, click the “Activate” button.
12. Return to the “Plugins” page to see that the ExactMetrics
plugin has been installed and activated. Then click the “Setting” link just
below the plugin name.
13.Then, select “Manually enter UA Code” and paste the Tracking
ID into the form and click “Save Changes.”
The “Google Analytics Dashboard” is now on your WordPress
Dashboard. The website traffic is monitored by days/years and by specific
filters by clicking the dropdown arrows on each button.
Congratulations! You have just installed a website
monitoring service on your WordPress Dashboard. In my next article we will cover
adding MailChimp; a list generating service to the website which, will allow
you to regularly communicate with website users that have opted-in to receive
your newsletter and other campaigns. MailChimp is a poplar and free email list
generating service that is widely used and has been around for a long time.
